When I was in the university, very often I used to listen to this song – The Reason

I've found a reason for me

To change who I used to be

A reason to start over new

And the reason is you

In Physics, we have four fundamental forces viz. Gravitation, Electromagnetic, Weak nuclear force and Strong nuclear force. These four forces are the reason behind everything material in the universe. The strongest among these is Strong nuclear force which is approximately 137 times as strong as electromagnetism, a million times as strong as the weak nuclear force and 100 Undecillion times (10^38 times i.e. 100 trillion trillion trillion times) as strong as gravitational force!

I have always wondered what the forces behind all things Human are – The reason behind the reason? What is it that truly motivates people to do what they do or even change who they used to be?

Fear – Preservation

Every human is concerned with self preservation. The question is existential. Fear can often make us swallow the bitter pill when presented with an uncomfortable choice. Countries spend billions of dollars in the fear that they may be attacked. Since time immemorial political leaders have used fear both as a means of control and as a tool to access power.

Fear is the fundamental force driving most people. Most of our actions are a result of fear – fear of a tyrant ruler, fear of law, fear of losing out or even fear of dying. Like gravity it is the most observable force. But it is also the weakest.

Hope or Desire – Aspiration

Every human is concerned with aspiration. Hope stems from desire - desire to break away from status quo. Hope is the force that keeps us going in adversity. “This too shall pass” is the hope. In Greek mythology when Pandora, the first woman on Earth, let out evils by opening the box the only solace was the Hope Fairy. Hope gives resilience to us as individuals and also as mankind. Without hope, all pursuits come to an end. Desire and hope can make you move past fear. Overcoming their fear, thousands of people cross the North Korean border or cross the Mediterranean in the hope of better life and a desire to break free. An extreme form of desire is what we call greed.

Desire is innate to us all but we seldom accept or admit it. Unlike gravity it is hidden within us. This is akin to weak nuclear force. Not always visible to the naked eye, but lurking nevertheless.

Duty – Righteousness

Most humans are righteous. We want to do the right thing. We often confuse duty with fear or love. It is neither. Duty is an independent concept. Loosely speaking, duty is the morally right thing to do. It is a very strong force as most of us want to be morally right. When a sense of duty arises, fears get annihilated and desires wane away.

Duty cannot be induced on its own. Duty towards whom? Duty for what? Just like iron behaves like magnet in presence of electromagnetic fields, duty also needs a focal point to manifest. For example, duty towards one’s country, duty to mankind, etc.

Love – Selflessness

How can any discussion on Human forces be complete without love? Love is completely selfless. Anything which is not selfless is probably not love. Love is the most potent force on the planet. It is much more powerful than fear, desire and duty put together.

Love is akin to strong nuclear force. Strong nuclear force is the strongest force in nature and is responsible for keeping the nucleus of atoms together. Without this force the atoms will disintegrate. What would happen without love? Well, humanity will disintegrate!

Conclusion

We often hear that fear and greed drive human actions. Every crime that was ever committed has either love or money involved in it. The more I think of it the more I conclude that there are only four forces behind every reason – I call them the Four Fundamental Human Forces. Now that we know the four fundamental forces, next article focuses on how to use these forces in our life.
